Colombia Earthquake: Coffee Logistics Impact
A deadly earthquake has struck Colombia’s key coffee-growing and logistics regions, with the death toll surpassing 180 and the government declaring an economic emergency. Roads, bridges, tunnels, mills, and port facilities are still being assessed, and some transportation and shipping operations have already been suspended or restricted.
Buenaventura — Colombia’s main Pacific gateway and the country’s primary coffee export hub — is currently inaccessible as officials’ complete infrastructure inspections. ASOEXPORT reports that coffee exports have been largely halted as a result. Asoexport’s Gustavo Gomez as saying “Coffee operations are currently paused. There may be some isolated operations, but at the moment the operation for exporting coffee has stopped.”
Colombia’s coffee supply chain was already tight, and these disruptions are likely to add further delays in moving coffee to port and scheduling shipments. On balance, the impact looks likely to be contained to logistics delays and destination availability issues rather than a hit to the underlying balance sheet — but we’re monitoring closely and will share updates as the picture develops.
