Yergacheffe/Yirgacheffe!
Where is the town of Yirgacheffe?
Also known as Irgachefe and sometimes spelled Yergacheffe, the town of Yirgacheffe is located in the Sidamo area of Ethiopia which is located about 1,900 meters above sea level. The town is considered to be the administrative center of this huge coffee farming district. Yirgacheffe is also said by some to be the place where coffee first originated. In other words the plant is native to the area and was first discovered there. However there is some debate over this issue though certainly it was in this general region. The birthplace of coffee was likely either in the Yirgacheffe area or in the Harrar area. This was the origin of the Coffea arabica so highly valued today and grown all around the world in the tropical regions primarily at higher elevations. The traditional Ethiopian word for coffee is Bun or Bunna.Eastern Ethiopia’s Sidamo region also produces organic Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffees, particularly in the area southeast of the Gulf of Aden. The Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative sells Fair Trade organic Ethiopian coffee has placed well in cupping trials of the Specialty Coffee Association of America through the years. Source: http://www.
