Honduras today is a reasonable and stable democracy with a popularly elected president and congress. Historically the country has experienced much political turmoil since achieving independence from Spain. Military coups and rebellions have left their mark and Honduras suffered huge losses from the impact of Hurricane Mitch in 1998, which destroyed 80% of its agriculture. The country has had many challenges to overcome in rebuilding its agricultural infrastructure and stability. Today, Honduras is the second largest coffee producer in Central America (after Guatemala). Over a million Hondurans work in the coffee industry, representing 22% of rural employment. The tragedy of Hurricane Mitch which destroyed the agricultural infrastructure of Honduras, provided a great opportunity for Honduran farmers to reinvent their coffee for the specialty coffee market in recent years, improving their crop quality and utilizing specialty, organic and fair trade premiums. Today Honduran coffee shines among the best in the industry.
