Mocha!
The word “Mocha” has several different meanings. The original meaning led, over time, to various other meanings.
The name Mocha originated as Mocha, Yemen, a port city from which coffee beans were exported. As a point of trade for coffee, the city’s name became somewhat synonymous with the beans themselves, so coffee from the region was sometimes referred to as “mocha” as well. Today, it “Mocha” can refer to a type of coffee bean from Yemen. It comes from a Coffea arabica varietal, but it is smaller and rounder than most other varieties.
While modern-day mocha coffee beans do not taste like chocolate, it is thought that early exports of mocha beans did. Later, the term “mocha” began to refer to the specific combination of chocolate and coffee, such as in Mocha Lattes. Today, the mix of coffee and chocolate is used to describe a number of foods and drinks, such as Mocha Milkshakes and Mocha Cake.
A similar term, moka, refers to the ibrik coffee pot which is used in Yemen, Turkey and nearby areas to make boiled coffee, commonly known as Turkish coffee or Greek coffee.
